FASHION TEXTILES: EMBROIDERY

The aim of this paper was to develop and implement embroidery design processes to visualise and comment on contemporary politics. Investigation of a chosen political issue, mark-making, drawing, and visual imagery provided the starting point to translate the issue into an embroidered form. This brief had two parts; firstly, refine and resolve three embroidered swatches. Secondly, further the most promising aspects of the embroidered swatches into an embroidered garment.

This embroidered garment was created in response to a project brief which asked for a creative expression of a political issue. I chose ocean acidification, which is where our oceans naturally absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but with more air pollution, the ocean's water is gradually becoming more acidic . The growing acidity in our oceans is impacting upon the health of oceanic ecosystems, an issue that needs to be addressed as the ocean provides food, jobs and resources for our world.
